Backup power supply for digital phone services

Your Brightspeed provided equipment requires electrical power to work. In the event of a power outage, Brightspeed recommends purchasing a battery backup unit (BBU) or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to extend your Brightspeed voice services, maintaining the ability to make and receive calls, including 911 calls. Brightspeed’s equipment works with most commercially available options. Brightspeed does not offer battery backup or uninterruptible power supply units for sale or rent.

Please note that in the event of an outage that impacts the internet network as well, the backup power supply may not guarantee functionality.

Things to know about using backup power equipment

In an electrical power outage, a backup power supply should last at least 24 hours in standby mode. You may not be able to access the internet on backup power, and services such as security alarms may not work.

You are responsible for obtaining, monitoring, replacing, and properly disposing of the backup power equipment. We recommend that you check the equipment at least twice a year to ensure it is operating and ready to use in case of a power outage.

IMPORTANT: Failure to maintain your backup power equipment may result in loss of voice service during a power outage, including access to Emergency 911 calls and other services.

Recommended purchase options for backup power equipment

Option 1:  Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system with surge protection.

  • Recommended vendors are Cyber Power and APC. Units can be found on Amazon, Best Buy and other computer supply retailers.
  • Minimum of 4 outlets to support connected devices.
    • All Brightspeed supplied equipment (ex. Modem/Router, ONT, phone adapter) must be plugged into a UPS device to maintain full functionality.
    • Warning: Charging additional devices on the UPS will deplete your available hours.
  • Disable your WiFi to conserve additional back up hours

Option 2:  Battery Backup Unit (BBU)

  • Includes portable power banks for mobile phones
  • Power supply can be plugged into the back of your device using a USB connection
  • Certain units will provide up to 24-hour support with additional purchased batteries
  • May require multiple units to power all of your connected devices
